Setting Out at First Light: A Scent for Optimists

There is a specific quality to the first hour of an early morning outdoors, before the sun is fully up, before the day's heat arrives, before you know how the day is going to go. Everything is possible. Nothing has gone wrong yet. The air has that specific coolness that belongs only to dawn, and whatever you're setting out to do still has the character of intention rather than outcome.

Setting Out at First Light was built for that hour.

The Brief

The brief asked for: pre-dawn air, before the dew has burned off, with green from whatever vegetation you're moving through and something mineral underneath from the earth and stone. An opening quality, not the established presence of a place you've been sitting in, but the forward quality of movement through a space.

We specifically wanted to avoid the generic "fresh outdoor" scent profile that dominates a lot of this category. Fresh and clean are easy to make. The specific quality of morning, the combination of cold, green, and mineral that says "before daylight, moving," is harder to isolate.

What the Scent Is

Setting Out at First Light opens with cold green notes, something between cut grass and living leaves, neither one exactly, and a mineral freshness underneath that reads as stone or cold water without being aquatic in the perfumery sense. The middle is where the air warmth starts to come in: a slight woody warmth, the suggestion of rising temperature. The base holds the mineral element and adds just enough depth to keep it from reading as simply "clean."

It's the most linear of our scents in the sense that it doesn't transform dramatically across the burn. The character at the start is close to the character at the end. That's intentional. The feeling of first light is consistent, not layered. It is what it is for that hour.

Who This Is For

This one is for morning people, or for people who want to feel like morning people. It belongs in a space where you're starting something: a study, a home office, anywhere that has the quality of beginning rather than ending. It's the counterpart to Nightcap in the Study in the collection: that scent is for the end of the day, this one is for the start.
