Heading Home after Last Call: The Close of a Good Night

There's a very specific quality to the air when you're walking home late at night after a good evening. The bar or the dinner or whatever it was has wound down. The night is cold. You're moving through it. The street is quiet in a way that cities only get very late. And there's a transition happening, from the warmth and noise of wherever you were to the particular quality of late night outdoors, which has its own character entirely.

Heading Home after Last Call is that transition.

The Moment

The brief was precise: cold night air with the warmth of the evening still on you. Not the street itself, but what you carry out of the bar into it. Tobacco and oak-aged spirits worked into your jacket. The leather of the seat you spent the night in. A thread of juniper from the last drink. The cold air on your face as the door closes behind you, and all of that warmth still clinging to you as you walk.

It's a scent about transition and memory. You're not at the beginning of the evening anymore. You're carrying it with you.

What Made It Difficult

The challenge was capturing warmth as a quality of cold air, suggesting the evening rather than replicating it. Fragrance tends to do one thing or the other: it's either warm or it's cold. Getting both, the cold of the air and the warmth of the recent past, required treating the two elements separately and layering them carefully.

The tobacco and leather had to read as residue, something that followed you out rather than something you're standing in. We spent time on the balance, keeping the warm notes close and worn-in instead of heavy, so they suggest the room you just left rather than putting you back inside it.

Where This One Belongs

This is a late-night candle. It's not for the beginning of an evening or the middle of one. It's for when you're home, coat still on for a moment, the evening barely over. It pairs with something to drink that's quieter than what you were having before, a glass of water, a last pour of something simple.

It's the bookend to Setting Out at First Light in the collection: that scent is for beginnings, this one is for endings, and the arc between them covers a full day. See Setting Out at First Light and What Each Scent in Our Collection Has in Common.
