Choosing a Candle Flight: Two, Three, or the Small Three

Three jars sit down into a board of sapele, flush with the wood. One is lit. The other two wait their turn, lids on. It looks less like a few candles and more like one thing.

That is a candle flight. We have written before about how a tray and a scent become one object. This post is the practical side: which flight to choose, and how to fill it.

What a flight is

A flight is a sapele tray with recessed pockets that hold the jars flush, finished in tung oil, plus your choice of scents. You pick what goes in. We put it together. It arrives ready.

There are three options:

  • Two-Candle Flight. Two flagship candles with the handmade red oak lid, in the two-candle tray. The product page labels these 10oz.
  • Three-Candle Flight. Three flagship candles with the red oak lid, in the three-candle tray.
  • Small Three-Candle Flight. Three 6oz candles, each with its own included wood lid, in the small three-candle tray.

If you are buying more than one candle anyway, a flight is the smartest way to do it. You can see all three on the candle flight page.

Two or three

Start with where it will sit.

Two fits a narrow space. A nightstand. A bathroom counter. The corner of a shelf. It also suits a simple idea: one scent for the start of the day, one for the end.

Three wants a little more room. A coffee table, a mantel, a dining table, a long dresser. Three gives you range. A morning, an afternoon, and an evening. Or three moods you move between during the week.

Flagship or small

The flagship flights are for scents you already know you love. The larger candles last longer, and each carries a red oak lid cut and finished in our shop. On the tray, the oak against the sapele is a quiet contrast of two woods.

The Small Three is for exploring. Three 6oz candles let you live with three scents without committing to three large jars. It suits smaller rooms and tighter surfaces, and it is an easy way into the collection. We wrote about the smaller candle in introducing the 6oz.

How to pick the scents

This is the fun part. There is no wrong answer, but a few approaches help.

By time of day

Give each jar a job. Something bright for the morning, something grounded for the evening. This is the easiest way to build a flight you actually use, because you always know which one to light.

A two-candle example: Back Porch in Early Morning (coffee, cream, cedar, sugar) and Nightcap in the Study (whiskey, oak, leather, smoke). Coffee to start, whiskey to finish.

A three-candle example: Setting Out at First Light for the morning, Mountain Trail at Dusk for late afternoon, and Wind Down by the Fireplace for the evening. Bergamot and eucalyptus, then moss and pine, then black cherry, red wine, and vanilla.

For more on this, a scent for every hour maps the whole collection to the day.

By mood

Some people choose by feeling instead of the clock. A fireside flight: Campfire in Evening, Wind Down by the Fireplace, and Heading Home after Last Call. Smoke, fruit, and tobacco. Warm and low.

Or an outdoor flight: Cabin after Rain, Mountain Trail at Dusk, and Setting Out at First Light. Rain, forest, and open air.

Harmony or contrast

Harmony means scents that share something. Woodshop at Night and Nightcap in the Study both carry leather and dark wood. They feel like two rooms in the same house.

Contrast means scents that pull in different directions. Cabin after Rain next to Campfire in Evening: wet cedar and ozone beside smoke and clove. Contrast keeps a flight interesting, because each candle feels like a change of scene.

Neither is better. Harmony is calm. Contrast is lively. Pick the one that sounds like your home.

A few more notes

You can mix and match any scents. Every candle is hand-poured 100% soy with a wood wick. The tray is useful long after the candles are gone. It holds the next ones, or it becomes a place for whatever you set down. If you already have candles and only want the tray, the candle tray is sold on its own in all three sizes. Match the tray to the jar size.

If a flight is headed to someone else, we wrote about the candle flight as a gift.

When you are ready, choose your size and your scents on the candle flight page, or browse the full candle collection first.
