How We Test Every Batch Before It Ships

We test every batch before it ships. That sentence is short enough that it might sound like a marketing line, but it describes an actual process that takes actual time. Here's what it involves and why we do it.

What We're Checking For

Before any of this, a batch cures for a minimum of two weeks. No exceptions. Soy wax needs time for the fragrance to fully bind into the wax structure, and testing before that window closes produces results that don't reflect what the customer will actually experience. When we develop a new scent, we also pour multiple candles with different wick sizes. Wick diameter affects how a candle performs based on the specific fragrance load, and getting it right requires testing the variable, not guessing at it.

There are several ways a batch of small-batch handcrafted candles can be off, and they don't all present the same way.

Pour quality is the first check. Did the wax cure evenly? Is there any visible separation or discoloration? Did the fragrance bind cleanly into the 100% soy wax? We look at the surface of every jar in a batch before anything else. A rough surface, an off-color wax, or seeping fragrance oil visible on the jar is a rejection at this stage.

Cold throw is what the candle smells like unlit. This is a quick check against our reference for that scent. Does it smell like it should? Cold throw is a rough indicator, not a full evaluation, but it catches batches where something is obviously wrong.

Hot throw and burn behavior is the full evaluation. We burn each test candle in four-hour sessions, taking notes on melt pool behavior and wick performance throughout. Is the flame the right height? Does the melt pool reach the edges without running hot? Is the scent throw present but not overwhelming? Is the character of the fragrance what we expect from this formula? The notes are specific, not pass/fail, but a record of what's happening at each stage of the burn.

If any of these fail, the batch doesn't ship.

Why We Do It Every Time

Batch testing isn't just for new scents or new materials. It's for every production run. Candle making involves enough variables, ambient temperature during the pour, humidity during the cure, slight variations in material lots, that no two batches are automatically identical. Testing is how we verify that the variables held within acceptable range for this specific batch.

We also keep notes on every batch evaluation. If a batch fails, we know what it failed on. If a batch is borderline, we note it. What Happens to a Failed Batch

It doesn't ship. Full stop. We don't discount it, we don't move it at farmers markets as-is, we don't send it because the flaw is minor. The candle that reaches you is a tested candle. Anything that isn't gets handled appropriately, which sometimes means starting over.

That policy is more costly than it sounds. A failed batch is lost materials, lost labor, and lost time. It's also the only way the standard has any meaning. We're two people pouring every candle ourselves on Long Island, New York. There's no QC department to pass the buck to. Either we take this seriously or we don't.

Every candle in the collection passed this process before it shipped.
